Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick
A friend recently gifted me the book that made her youngest child excited to read... Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick. First of all, let's just consider what an incredible gift that is... to bestow upon a book lover the book that changed the reading life of someone they love. I was very honored to have received such a gift. The intersection of beautiful drawings and honest writing really emphasizes the two different stories and makes the convergence of those two stories the mo

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
As I mentioned in a previous post, I had fallen in love with Neil Gaiman's children books after a friend so thoughtfully sent me a copy of Blueberry Girl after the birth of Lorelai. The book was honest and empowering, and it has since become my go-to gift for friends having daughters.I also follow Gaiman religiously on Twitter, but hadn't yet had the opportunity to read his books available to older age groups. And don't forget... Banned Book Week takes place from September 21st-27th! #bannedbook #holiday #ulysses #jamesjoyce

A great night and an even greater gift!
So, last night I chose to break out of my book hermit ways and attended a discussion at a beautiful independent book store local to me (Byrd's Books in Bethel, CT if you want to make a trip). They were holding a conversation on The Giver in anticipation of the release of the film adaptation (August 15th!) and, as you know, I'm a big ole sucker for Jonas et al. I grabbed a good friend, a big cup of coffee and jumped out of my comfort zone.
And I'm so glad I did. It was a
