I was sitting in a kid's program with Lorelai at our local library today when I received a text from my friend, Becca:
"Maya Angelou passed away."
I'm sitting amongst a group of happy children and singing parents that have no idea that this world is less one amazing, strong, beautiful woman. These children will only know Angelou's work in the historical sense. They will never know a world where the regal woman who wrote I Know Why the Caged Bird Singswalks amongst us mer

And the world loses another great. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has died at the age of 87 after a long illness.
In his honor, I will be putting down The Goldfinch for the time being and finally get around to reading One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Today, we say goodbye to a sweet, kindly, talented woman... an author who made the green hills of Ireland and the humor of it's people come alive for so many readers.
The author of such beautiful stories as Tara Road and Circle of Friends, Maeve Binchy left us at 72, after a short illness.

For most people who grew up within the past 50 years, the name Jan Berenstain likely brings up some fond memories. Jan Berenstain, who wrote and illustrated the popular children's book series The Berenstain Bears, passed away Friday shortly after suffering a stroke. She was 88 years old. She was predeceased by her husband Stan (another name very familiar to most kids who grew up after 1962), who also wrote and illustrated the adventures of Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Brother Bear
