The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien I read this for my local independent bookstore's monthly book group. I was a little afraid going into it. My stepmother (a HUGE Tolkien fan) had tried to get me to read this book so many times in my childhood and adolescence. And I just could never get into it. Hell, I couldn't even bring myself to watch The Lord of the Rings movies (the filters bother me... everything is so... blue). And besides Harry Potter (actually another series my stepm

"Ain't nobody got time for that!"
I recently discovered that Taystee on Orange is the New Black feels some kind of way about Ulysses. She and I appear to be kindred spirits. Right on, Taystee! I really need to watch Orange is the New Black. I read the book years ago... it was one of those ones I just picked up because I liked the cover. And then began reading it and realized that it's about the prison in the town I was born in (one town over from where I grew up and currently live). I highly recommend th

You're on my list, JK Rowling!
If you're a Harry Potter fan, you've been anxiously awaiting the opening of Pottermore. I tried desperately to get in on the ground floor and be a part of the beta testing, but apparently you needed to quit your job and sit in front of your computer, eyelids propped open with toothpicks so as not to miss the .1285 second opportunity Ms. Rowling gave her adoring fans to get in. Needless to say, I have a house and kitty-mouths to feed, so I had to give up and wait until I cou

This feels wrong!
What is this thing sitting in front of me that is made with actual paper and has words made of ink? Does.not.compute. It LOOKS like a book, but I'm forced to actually move my entire hand to turn the page. I'm too busy and important for this. And it's TOTALLY unacceptable that I have to actually use something to keep my place! It's not like there's some sort of invention that would mark the place in your book. Also, there is only one story contained within the pages and
So long Dickens, hello... Voldemort?
I never thought I'd see this day, but we made it through the Dickens marathon. And as a reward, Amy Sherman-Palladino (aka My Lordess... the woman who is the genius behind Gilmore girls) has seen fit to reward me with a little bit of light, fun reading. The next book we'll be reading is Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I'm psyched. And although I'm tempted to start with The Sorcerer's Stone and keep reading all the way throug
