Introducing my own Sookie/Lane... at least on this journey
Whenever you are going on a trip, it's always a good idea to have a trusty companion. A good friend that will make the time seem quick and provide great company along the way. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to my electronic version of Sookie and Lane!Last Christmas, my mom gave me what might be my most cherished gift ever... a 3rd generation wifi and 3g capable Amazon Kindle. This invention has changed my life (or my reading habits, at least). Originally dubbed "Aldous" (after Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World), he quickly became a good friend. I found that I read more and, due to Amazon's amazing classics collection, had access to to the most highly renowned books FOR FREE! Since I received this gift, I have recommended a Kindle to anyone who reads. I am not in any way affiliated with Amazon... but buy one... NOW!Sadly, Aldous suffered a cracked screen on an ill-fated trip to our cabin in upstate New York. Because of Amazon's incredible customer service, I had a brand new Kindle in my possession within two business days. But now was the trouble of what to call this new Kindle. I LOVED the name Aldous, so I was disappointed that I would have to bury it along with my original Kindle. I tried to find a way to keep the name... Aldous Jr? Aldous Part 2? Aldous the Sequel? Nothing seemed appropriate. Then (and this was the first time this has ever happened to me), I actually felt like a cartoon character with a lightbulb above my head. ALDEUX! I don't consider myself an incredibly clever person, so I was (probably a little too) astounded at my own brilliance. For those of you who didn't take 5 years of honors French (that you have never used) in high school, "deux" means "two". Aldeux... it was perfect!Recently, I treated Aldeux to some new duds. If you are looking for high quality skins with tons of available options, I highly recommend DecalGirl. As you will see below, Aldeux is now sometimes referred to as "Owldeux" (again, I am SUPER impressed with myself for coming up with this)... at least until he gets a new skin.
Aldeux might not be as cute as Pushkin, and might not have that book-smell that Rory loves, but I would like to think that Rory would appreciate the fact that Kindles are encouraging more reading amongst people who might not have easy access to a library. With the push of a button, you have access to millions of volumes. It really is astounding to me when I think about it... a reader's dream! I have a lot of reading to do on this journey... and I am honored that Aldeux will be joining me on the road!
