I don't want to dwell on this, but felt I needed to say something.
I grew up in picturesque Bethel, Connecticut. Which is the neighboring town of equally-picturesque Newtown, Connecticut. So many of my friends went to Sandy Hook Elementary and have chosen to raise their families in Newtown. Husband and I have been looking into moving back to our hometown area (we currently live approximately 30 miles north)... And Newtown was our main focus in our house-hunting endeavor. It still is.
Newtown and Bethel are like Stars Hollow. Everyone knows everyone... Which has its good and bad points. Although I know Amy Sherman-Palladino based Stars Hollow on Washington Depot, CT.. anyone who grew up in this area sees soooo much of our own little towns and communities when watching episodes of Gilmore girls.
This kind of tragedy reminds you that even a town as seemingly perfect as Stars Hollow isn't immune to the horrors and atrocities that lurk in our world. But it also reminds you of the immense support and love that pours out from a tight-knit community like Newtown, Connecticut.
Now please know, I do not have any claim to this tragedy. Although Newtown is a part of my neighborhood... Only Newtown's amazing residents can know quite what this heartbreak feels like. While the entire country (and world) feels Newtown's pain at this very moment, my heart goes out to the men, women and children of that wonderful community who now have to find a way to pick up the pieces and move on... stronger and more resolved to continue to love and heal.
I am so lucky to be able to say that that area of Connecticut is my home... and no angry person will ever take that away from me.
