Gone Girl... the movie

A few years ago, my very first download from Audible was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It was the type of book that had me screaming in my car, having a hard time dragging myself from the driver's seat when I got home and finding excuses to find some time to keep listening. Flynn has an incredible capacity to flip the sympathies of the reader between the two main characters... a writing technique that was essential for the success of this book. And she nailed it. It was the first true page-turner I had read in awhile and I loved to find people who had read it so we could discuss our thoughts on Nick, Amy and their toxic marriage.

This past Thursday, the film adaptation of Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike premiered. And because I made the m̶i̶s̶t̶a̶k̶e̶ beautiful decision to procreate, it took me a few days to be able to find the time to see it! Last night, armed with a delicious vanilla macciahto and a baby fast asleep at home... I got to spend a few hourswatching what David Fincher did to Flynn's acclaimed novel.

And I know a lot of people disagree, but I think he absolutely pulled it off. Fincher was able to replicate the same feeling of being trapped by a life of your own making that the author inspired in me during my initial reading. Affleck and Pike made an incredible Nick and Amy... and NPH as Desi was a bonus! All of the complaints I heard about the adaptation seem to be made by people who still don't get the fact that a book that took you several days to read can't possibly be completely replicated in the 2.5 hours the movie ran. David Fincher retained the spirit of desperation, fear and anger that Gillian Flynn wrote and did so in a way that stayed true to the other characters and the overall storyline.

But I wont lie... when I slipped into bed last night, I gave my sleeping (and completely innocent) husband the side-eye for a second. That bastard best not be planning anything crafty! ;)

If you're interested in seeing Gone Girl, here's the trailer for your viewing pleasure.
