I was sitting in a kid's program with Lorelai at our local library today when I received a text from my friend, Becca:
"Maya Angelou passed away."
I'm sitting amongst a group of happy children and singing parents that have no idea that this world is less one amazing, strong, beautiful woman. These children will only know Angelou's work in the historical sense. They will never know a world where the regal woman who wrote I Know Why the Caged Bird Singswalks amongst us mere mortals, spreading her message of love and perseverance. But it also reminded me of why the written word is so incredibly important. These children will be able to pick up her work in their library, local Barnes & Noble or order it from Amazon, and in seconds, their worlds will be changed with the words of a woman who truly understood and stood in awe of the strength of the human spirit. She may no longer be with us, but they say a writer never dies... as their soul continues on long after through their stories and poetry.
And Maya Angelou has left this world with one incredible legacy.
